The golden glory of Shwedagon Paya

When you fly to Yangon, you can’t miss the extraordinary sight of the Shwedagon Paya dominating the skyline. The stupa rises nearly 328 feet (100 metres) above the low-rise cityscape, covered in 27 metric tons of gold leaf, as well as diamonds and other jewels.

The Shwedagon Paya is one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites, and is believed to house strands of hair from the Buddha himself. As the sun sets, the temple comes alive as the crowds gather to watch the stupa seemingly catch fire in the light of the setting sun.

When you fly to Yangon, there are plenty of great hotels to choose from to suit a range of budgets. The best place to base yourself is downtown, either close to the river or near People’s Park. It’s an area packed with great restaurants and you’ll also be close to the main attractions of the city.

How many days should I spend in Yangon?

If you’re just staying in Yangon itself, then five days should give you enough time to explore the main attractions and get a feel for the city. If you plan to explore the surrounding countryside, or visit another city or the beach, then plan to stay at least a week or longer.

What languages are spoken in Myanmar?

Burmese is the national language, though some locals will speak a little English, especially in hotels and at tourist landmarks.
