Reasons to visit Nairobi

Nature on your doorstep

When you fly to Nairobi, you’ll find nature just outside the city limits. With just a short drive, you can soon be watching zebras and plenty more incredible local wildlife grazing in the 45 square miles of lush greenery at Nairobi National Park.

Glimpse endangered species – such as the black rhinoceros – and spot lions, crocodiles, hippos, rhinos, buffalo and gazelles in this incredible attraction. Photographers will love the contrast of Africa’s wildlife with the backdrop of skyscrapers.

See conservation in action

Take a trip to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to see orphaned elephants and rhinos being rehabilitated. The trust flies in baby animals from across the country and cares for them until they’re ready to return to the wild.

Nairobi’s Giraffe Centre is another great spot for getting close to nature. The centre breeds the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe and then releases calves into the wild when they’re about two to three years old. Resident giraffes are tame enough to come right up to you. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to see these African giants and help a good cause.

Try out your haggling skills

Nairobi’s vibrant and colourful Maasai markets are some of the city’s best attractions. Don’t miss the chance to pick up a hand-crafted African souvenir, practice your bartering skills, or simply experience the hustle and bustle of the marketplace.

You’ll find stalls filled with art, wood carvings, jewellery and a rainbow of fabrics. There’s bound to be something beautiful you can’t wait to take back home. Markets across Nairobi open daily, apart from Mondays.
