Opened back in 1971 and sprawling across 40 square miles, visitors can spend days exploring the four parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.
Each area not only boasts thrilling rides, but also interactive attractions and meet and greets with well-known characters such as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. With so much for families to do, it is little wonder it has earned the tag the ‘Happiest Place on Earth’.
Ride the rollercoasters
Families are well catered for in Orlando, but it’s not just the children who will enjoy a day out at Universal Orlando Resort. Smaller and easier to navigate than Walt Disney World, this theme park offers fun for the entire family thanks to its range of adrenaline-fuelled rollercoasters and entertaining live shows.
Consisting of three theme parks, Islands of Adventure has the bulk of the thrill rides, while Universal Studios has an array of movie-based attractions. Finally, the recently opened Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a must-visit for fans of the JK Rowling novels.
Stroll through Loch Haven Park
Take a break from the thrills and head to Loch Haven Park, which is perfect for an afternoon wander. Covering 45 acres and home to three picturesque lakes, there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy thanks to the array of theatres and museums.
There is an outdoor performance plaza with regular shows, while the Orlando Ballet and Museum of Fine Art are also located within the park. Ideal for children, the Orlando Science Centre has a vast array of exciting, interactive exhibits and live programmes that are designed to inspire curiosity.
Things to know before you fly to Orlando
Transfers from the airport
Orlando International Airport is 12 miles (19 km) from the centre of the city. There are several shuttle services and taxis readily available outside of the airport. Alternatively, book a transfer with Etihad to make the journey even easier.
Getting around
Renting a car is recommended as many of the city’s top attractions are spread out. Taxis are typically available at the theme parks, alongside public transport options – buses travel between the main attractions regularly.
Fun in the sun
Orlando is typically warm and sunny whenever you visit so sun protection is important. Visiting a theme park typically means plenty of time outside, whether watching a parade or queuing for your next rollercoaster. It’s a good idea to pack plenty of suncream, layers to cover up with and a hat too.

If you are planning to visit the famous theme parks, then you need at least a week to explore all they have to offer. You can easily spend six whole days in these complexes thanks to the abundance of rides and attractions. Stretch your break to 10 days and you will also have time to explore downtown and its many museums and first-class restaurants. You could also hire a car and drive to the beach in less than an hour.
What should I eat in Orlando?
Orlando boasts a diverse and colourful culinary landscape with influences from all corners of the globe. Being in the south of the USA, the city is known for its BBQ which tends to be equal parts spicy and tangy. Asian influence can also be found thanks to an influx of excellent ramen restaurants.
