National holidays
UAE National Day is celebrated on 2 December every year, marking the coming together of the seven emirates. It’s a public holiday and is celebrated with fireworks, festivals and flag decoration.
Local currency
The national currency of the United Arab Emirates is the Arab Emirate Dirham (AED).
USD are also accepted in many places.
Language
Arabic is the official language of the United Arab Emirates – ‘hello’ in Arabic is ‘marhaba’. Much of the population is also English-speaking.
Plug outlet
Standard plug sockets in the UAE are types C, D and G. Travellers from the UK won’t need a plug adaptor, but most people travelling from other countries will.

Where should I fly to in the UAE?
Abu Dhabi (AUH) is perfectly placed as a starting point for your UAE adventure. The airport is only a 25-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi and just 15 minutes from Yas Island. Travelling to other emirates is relatively straightforward – it’s around a 90-minute drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.
What is the local cuisine in the UAE?
Emirati cuisine is delicious and undoubtedly more-ish. Try shawarma, sliced meat served in a flatbread with salad and tons of sauce – usually made with garlic and yoghurt. For vegetarians, try falafel in a flatbread instead.
For something sweet, try luqaimat – sweet dumplings covered in date syrup. These bite-sized treats pair brilliantly with a cup of Arabian coffee.
How many days do you need to visit the UAE?
Most visitors looking to visit more than one region in the United Arab Emirates take between a week and 10 days to explore all the country has to offer. If Abu Dhabi is your destination, five days to a week will give you time to really get to know the city.
