Chengdu enjoys a fairly temperate climate with warm summers and relatively mild winters compared to other parts of China. Summer is the most popular period for visitors, although much of the annual rainfall occurs in July and August.

If you’re looking for warmer temperatures without as much wet weather, consider visiting between April and June. March to early May is a great time to enjoy the colours of spring, while October and November see lower visitor numbers and still enjoy pleasant temperatures.

Hugely popular with visitors to Chengdu, the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is a 45-minute drive north of the city by bus, taxi or as part of a guided tour.

Visit early in the morning when these naturally docile creatures are at their most active and watch them dine on their favourite snack among lush bamboo groves.

The centre is focused on the care of giant pandas and isn’t a zoo, however it’s also home to other animals including golden monkeys and red pandas. The raccoon-like red pandas have bags of energy and like to keep you on your toes, so keep your eyes peeled for mischief.

Marvel at the Qingyang Temple

First built during the Zhou Dynasty more than 1,000 years ago, the Qingyang Temple is one of the largest Taoist places of worship in the whole of China.

Composed of several ornate palaces adorned with intricate statues and bronze sculptures plucked from ancient mythology, the Qingyang Temple is the perfect place to take in local history. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon exploring, then relax with the locals and a hot drink at the temple’s teahouse.

This incredible Buddhist monastery is the largest of its kind in western China. Located half an hour’s drive from Chengdu, enjoy some quiet reflection as you bask in the tranquillity of Wenshu Monastery.

Things to know before you fly to Chengdu

Transfers from the airport

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is located 10 miles (16 kilometres) from the city. You can pre-book your airport transfer with Etihad, and have your driver waiting for you when you arrive. You can also hop on the metro from the airport or use the reliable shuttle bus service.

Cultural considerations

Remember to be respectful when entering any religious sites. Wearing appropriate clothing and covering your knees and shoulders is a must. In Buddhist sites, it’s also important to remove your shoes and socks before entering any temples and to always face any effigies of Buddha head on.

Getting around

In Chengdu there is a metro system and city bus network, with signposts in English. There are plenty of taxis and a long-distance bus service if you want to explore further afield.

There are designated cycle lanes too, making this a good way to see the city.

Language

Many languages are spoken across China. Chengdu residents tend to speak Mandarin and Sichuanese, which is a version of Southwestern Mandarin.
