Explore Kolkata's past
The white marble structure of the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata is built at the southern end of the huge Maidan Park – the ‘lungs of Kolkata’ – and similar in size to Chicago’s Lincoln Park.
The memorial commemorates the passing of Queen Victoria. It’s home to a royal gallery, which has exhibits on the history of Kolkata, back when it was called Calcutta.
Fabulous festivities
Kolkata offers a very different meaning to the word ‘festival’ during Durga Puja and Kali Puja – long celebrations during the autumn months, celebrating Hindu gods.
But it’s the countless colourful clay effigies of these deities that sets them apart from the never-ending festivals in Chicago. Watch them be created in specialist workshops along Banamali Sarkar Street, then settle into the festivities yourself.
