Discover capital attractions

Washington D.C. is home to some of America’s most prized historic and cultural artefacts, with 17 galleries and museums making up the capital’s renowned Smithsonian Institution.

Take a deep dive into the wonders of nature at the Natural History Museum, or gaze at the masterpieces lining the walls of the National Gallery of Art, American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery.

Take in the white marble Lincoln Memorial, towering Washington Monument and the distinctive dome of the US Capitol Building.

For something completely different, reach for the stars at the National Air and Space Museum. Check out a lunar module and other fascinating exhibits from the famous Apollo missions.

Where to stay in the USA

The city that never sleeps

Get to the very heart of it in New York among the soaring skyscrapers and incredible dining spots of Manhattan.

The Roger hotel on Madison Avenue offers plenty of glamour alongside easy access to Central Park and a host of hotly-tipped eateries.

Cool vibes abound in Brooklyn, centred on the artsy, hipper-than-hip neighbourhood of Williamsburg. Tribeca, meanwhile, leaves you ideally placed to take a stroll along Broadway and catch a must-see musical.

Chicago style

For a luxury holiday to remember, check into a four or five-star hotel in Chicago’s prestigious Gold Coast district.

Home to a range of high-end stores, you’ll find a host of fashionable boutiques and designer names as you explore the elegant streets.

The nearby Old Town boasts charming, Victorian-era buildings, along with the revered Second City comedy club that launched some of the industry’s greatest talents.

River North – also just a short journey away – boasts an entire area dedicated to restaurants, and another famous for its numerous art galleries and exhibitions.

California dreaming

If you want to experience the excitement of America’s movie star city while still being a stone’s throw from the beach, Los Angeles has plenty to offer.

The Downtown area has a clutch of quality hotels to choose from, but Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica are the perfect spots if you’re looking to enjoy cooler coastal conditions.

For a taste of old-school style, head to the luxurious Casa del Mar – a favoured hangout for Hollywood stars going back to the 1920s. This Santa Monica hotel offers amazing Pacific views and direct access to the beach.

Culture

The USA is a culturally diverse nation – something that’s reflected in its music, art, cuisine and distinctive city districts.

A number of cities are home to vibrant Chinatown neighbourhoods, among them New York, LA and San Francisco. Others incorporate influences from roots as far-ranging as Mexican, Italian, German, Japanese and Polynesian.

A holiday to the USA could see you taking in a live rock concert in trendy Brooklyn one week, then marvelling at Native American art and heritage the next.

History

Populated by Native American peoples, settled by pilgrims and fortune-seekers, then forged through revolutionary and civil wars, the US has had an eventful history.

Many of its most historic buildings can be found in and around Boston and Washington D.C. In the former, the Old State House Museum offers insights into the city that ignited the American Revolution.

The capital is where you can explore the political heritage of the country that emerged from the embers, while the museums of its Smithsonian Institution provide a vivid glimpse into the nation’s past.
