Chicago is hottest in July, averaging around 24°C, and boasts pleasant temperatures from May to September. This is when a lot of the annual festivals take place, from Lollapalooza, a musical extravaganza, to food festivals celebrating hot dogs or ribs.
During December to February, temperatures can fall to below freezing in Chicago. You can go ice-skating at this time of year, enjoy the festive lights and markets, or head to one of the indoor winter gardens.

Things to know before you fly to Chicago
Transfers from the airport
O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is 18 miles northwest of the city centre. The Blue Line ‘L’ train will take you from the airport to downtown in about 45 minutes. Buses run early in the morning to late at night, multiple times an hour. Or pre-book an airport transfer with Etihad – direct from the airport to your hotel lobby.
Plugs
Plug sockets used in Chicago are type A and B. It’s worth buying a plug adaptor that fits US sockets before you fly to Chicago so you can charge your devices while you’re in the Windy City.
Getting around
The ’L’ Train (short for ’elevated’) runs over 108 miles, across Chicago and into some surrounding suburbs. Buy a day ticket or use Ventra Cards, available at stations and on a phone app, to load credit.

Head to the lively Streeterville district if you’re on a budget. River North is best for nightlife and shopping, while Wicker Park is considered one of the best bohemian areas. If you are travelling with children, Lincoln Park is a good spot – it’s a family friendly neighbourhood.
How many days should I spend in Chicago?
There’s enough to keep you occupied in Chicago for weeks, but in five to seven days you’ll be able to see the major landmarks. Make sure to visit Willis Tower, the Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile, which includes landmarks such as the Chicago Water Tower and neo-gothic Tribune Tower.
