Discover the wonder of Indonesia

Flights to Indonesia transport you to a true world of wonder.

Spread across thousands of exotic islands, Indonesia boasts astonishing temples, majestic mountains and waters filled with manta rays and whale sharks.

Meanwhile, the country’s jungles teem with wildlife. Komodo dragons, orangutans, elephants and tigers can all be found among the lush landscape.

The sheer range of experiences on offer in Indonesia means you could be taking in the stalls at a bustling market one day, then watching the sun rise over spectacular volcanos the next.

Using Jakarta or Surabaya as your base, you can visit the eerie lunar landscape of Mount Bromo or spend a day wandering the huge, iconic Borobudur complex. If white sand and clear blue waters appeal, then Bali has some of the world’s best beaches for bathing and diving.

Fly to Indonesia with Etihad to discover remote villages, rare wildlife, thriving cities and more.

When you step off your flight to Indonesia you can expect to experience a tropical climate. There’s warm, dry weather between late June and early October, some rain in other months, and temperatures generally above 25°C on average throughout the year.

Indonesia is a large nation and many islands have their own microclimates. Wherever you’re flying to in Indonesia, it’s a good idea to check the local weather before you travel.

Reasons to visit Indonesia

Explore ancient temples

Once you’ve booked your Indonesia flight tickets, one of the best places to add to your to-do list is the vast ninth-century Borobudur temple complex, as well as the equally impressive but perhaps lesser-known Hindu temple of Prambanan from the same period.

A bit of exploring will uncover dozens of smaller temples that are less visited yet still full of history – combining remarkable architecture with spiritual serenity. On Bali, enjoy the views from the cliff-side Uluwatu Temple, or enter the stunning gateway at Pura Besakih.

Take a dive into crystal-clear waters

Travel to Indonesia’s smaller islands to discover superb snorkelling and diving opportunities. The protected waters of its marine parks are home to whale sharks, giant manta rays and colourful reefs.

Fly to Bali then take a boat to neighbouring islands such as Nusa Lembongan or the Gilis. Further afield you can find shallow reefs off Sulawesi, or watch majestic Komodo dragons with a tour of the Komodo National Park.

Scale towering volcanos

Indonesia is home to dozens of volcanos – some of which regularly send out smoke or even spew lava. Tours can take you to the summit of the more stable ones, where you can walk along ancient lava flows, look down into the bubbling lakes or simply enjoy the views from the top.

The volcanic, colourful lakes in Kelimutu are a joy to behold, while Mount Bromo’s peaks are often topped with volcanic smoke. A flight to Bali will bring you face to face with Mount Batur, in the north of the island.

Things to know before you fly to Indonesia

meals Local cuisine

Locals generally speak Indonesian – but might also use one of 700 different local languages such as Javanese or Balinese. English is widely spoken, however, especially in the cities.

currency Local currency

The local currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Haggling is commonplace in markets around the nation, but you probably won’t be able to negotiate on prices in shops and hotels.

Flying to Indonesia: FAQs

How many airports are in Indonesia?

What is the main airport in Indonesia?

Jakarta International Airport (CGK) – also known as Soekarno–Hatta International Airport – is the main airport in Indonesia. It’s around 17 miles outside Jakarta, just under an hour away by train. Bali’s main airport is Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), while Juanda International Airport (SUB) serves the city of Surabaya.

What is Indonesia most famous for?

Indonesia is famous for a number of geographical, cultural and natural reasons. It boasts a remarkable array of volcanos, the renowned beaches of Bali, the historic Buddhist temple at Borobudur, and some of the world’s most beloved and revered animals – including orangutans, Komodo dragons and monkeys.

Why we love Indonesia

“Indonesia is special for so many reasons, but the historic temples, friendly people and stunning landscapes are at the heart of its appeal. Snorkel in the beautiful, clear waters and visit some reefs when you’re in Bali. You’ll never want to leave those golden sands.”
