With more than 80 museums to choose from, there’s something for every interest in Munich. The Deutsches Museum is probably the most famous, boasting 28,000 items that celebrate the progression of science and technology.
The Munich Residence, once owned by the city’s rulers during the days of the Wittelsbach dynasty, boasts lavish interiors guaranteed to take your breath away. Meanwhile, the Lenbachhaus features works by some of the world’s most acclaimed artists including Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
Munich is proud of its many museums, and you can often secure good value tickets and enjoy late-night openings.
Visit Cologne’s beautiful cathedral
Cologne Cathedral is one of the most visited landmarks in the whole of Germany, with six million people a year making their way to this medieval masterpiece. This great Gothic structure towers above the city, with the slightly taller north tower standing at 516 feet.
Marvel at the architecture and intricate stained glass windows and explore the shrine to the Three Wise Men. Then, climb up 533 steps in the south tower for a breathtaking view over the Rhine.
Walk along the Berlin Wall
The East Side Gallery is a mile-long stretch of the Berlin Wall that still stands today, covered in art that has been painted since the fall of the wall.
The wall divided the city during the Cold War but the gallery, on the banks of the Spree, features paintings and artwork that reflect the celebratory mood as the wall came down and Germany was reunified.
Explore for yourself or book a guided tour before you fly to Germany for a more detailed insight into the wall’s history. There are also plaques in remnants of the wall across the city, as well as many other tangible reminders of the Cold War.
