The currency in the Maldives is the Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR). It’s not widely available outside the country, but you can exchange your money when you arrive or use your bank card. However, many resorts will accept USD.

Locals in the Maldives speak Dhivehi, the country’s official first language. In Malé and on many of the resort islands, you’ll find most people will speak and understand some English.

What animals can be found in the Maldives?

The Maldives are revered for their incredible underwater life and unforgettable diving experiences. Some of the ocean’s largest residents also pass by these islands on migratory routes, including whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, manta rays and various species of dolphin.

Where should I fly to in the Maldives?

The Maldives has one international airport – Velana (MLE), located on Hulhulé within the North Malé Atoll. Many of the resorts are located on their own islands and will usually offer chartered services by boat or seaplane to and from the international airport.

Can I access an ATM in the Maldives?

It’s worth noting that ATM and cash withdrawal facilities are only found in Malé and around the airport grounds. There are no ATMs on the resort islands. However, most resorts will accept card payments. It’s a good idea to have some cash available to pay for boat transfers and tips.
