Residents whizz past on vintage bicycles, aromas from every corner of the world waft from street food trucks, and masterpieces from the greatest painters hang on display throughout the city.

When you’ve seen some of Rembrandt’s greatest works there’s always the option of visiting a cat museum or an exhibit dedicated just to cheese.

You can indulge in culture to your heart’s content here, but Amsterdammers don’t take life too seriously.

Prepare to be inspired by the city’s sense of gezelligheid – an indefinable cosiness and light-hearted approach to life – when you book flight tickets to Amsterdam with Etihad Airways.

Amsterdam is warmest in July and August and its famous tulips bloom in spring. If you visit between October and March you’ll find that the climate is cooler.

Rainfall is not often heavy but is relatively consistent throughout the year, including the summer period, so it’s a good idea to pack a light rainproof jacket or umbrella for sightseeing.

Reasons to visit Amsterdam

Discover a museum for every passion

Whatever your passion, there seems to be a museum tailored to it in Amsterdam – there are more than 140 in the city. Whether you love cats, cheese, handbags or the work of the Dutch Masters, Amsterdam’s museums have something for everyone.

For classic artwork and sculpture, stop by the Rijksmuseum. Home to Rembrandt’s The Night Watch painting, you can also see works by Vermeer along with Dutch paintings dating back to the 15th century.

One of Amsterdam’s most famous museums is the Anne Frank House. Hiding with her family in a secret annex here for more than two years, the teenager’s diary has become one of the most important ever written. Trace her footsteps in this poignant museum.

Embrace nature

There are more bicycles than people in Amsterdam, which makes it easy to explore. Book Amsterdam flights for a city break and you’ll find more than just another urban jungle.

With 30 parks, a floating flower market and botanical gardens, you’ll be enchanted by how this city embraces nature and how everything is easily accessed on two wheels.

Be charmed by the 4,000 species of plants in Hortus Botanicus’ garden or discover Amsterdam’s forest – Amsterdamse Bos – on the outskirts. It’s the place to picnic, kayak or hike, while lucky visitors will see woodpeckers, salamanders and even birds of prey.

Dine around the world

Amsterdam is one of the world’s most diverse cities for dining. From local cheeses and stroopwafels to globally recognised cuisine, you’ll be spoilt for choice at every meal.

For a gastronomic treat, the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants are not to be missed. Head to the Zuidas district, where chefs at Bolenius are working their magic creating modern dishes fuelled by traditional Dutch flavours.

Visit Vuurtoreneiland for a five-course menu cooked on a simple open flame and served on a small, rugged island. For a niche dining experience try The Avocado Show, where, as the name suggests, every dish is avocado-inspired.
