Things to know before you fly to Jakarta
Airport transfers
Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK) is about 25 miles from the city centre, and it typically takes 45 minutes to 75 minutes in a taxi to travel between the two, depending on the traffic. Book a transfer with Etihad for a quick and convenient connection to central Jakarta.
If you prefer to use public transport, you can buy bus tickets from the kiosk inside the airport. Trains are also available.
Cultural considerations
The vast majority of people in Indonesia are Muslim, but the government also lists Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism as official religions as well as Islam.
Indonesians like to avoid conflict, so it’s best to not raise your voice to avoid being seen as rude. Saying ‘boleh’ (meaning ‘may I?’) is a way to be polite.
Getting around
Local buses and trains in Jakarta can be crowded. You may want to opt for a taxi or an air-conditioned Transjakarta bus to get around. A fun alternative is the ‘bajaj’, Indonesia’s version of a tuk tuk, which has three wheels and open sides. Your driver may not speak English and you should negotiate a price before setting off.
Plugs
Indonesia uses type C, E and F plugs. These two-pin plugs are similar to the designs used in many European countries. Standard voltage and frequency are 230V/50Hz. Consider packing a universal power adaptor should you require power usage.
