Admire the Petronas Towers
The dual spires of the Petronas Towers are the iconic symbols of Kuala Lumpur. Standing at almost 1,500 feet tall, they were the tallest buildings in the world until 2004.
An architectural wonder, the towers are home to a philharmonic concert hall, a vast shopping mall and the regional offices of many of the world’s most recognisable brands.
Head to the Skybridge on the 41st floor for stunning views of KL – and be sure to visit the towers at night to see them illuminated in a dazzling light show.
Explore the Batu Caves
The Batu Caves are a marvellous example of man and nature working in unison. Inside the network of limestone caves – just north of Kuala Lumpur – is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Tamil God Murugan.
The entrance to the cave network is dominated by the imposing Lord Murugan Statue. You’ll climb 272 steps as part of your pilgrimage to the cave entrance.
Inside, the roof of the cave looms high above, as monks and other worshippers stroll between the interior temples. A truly spiritual experience, it’s one not to be missed.
Shop and eat at Bukit Bintang
For a little retail therapy, head to Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur’s premier shopping district. Home to all things fashion and entertainment, the flashing advertising boards, mega-malls and upmarket shops in this inner-city district are reminiscent of New York’s Times Square.
There are plenty of food options here too, with local and international chains all jostling for attention. You’ll find upmarket hotels and plenty of vibrant nightlife spots too.
A walk through Bukit Bintang to the west will bring you to Petaling Street, home of the city’s Chinatown district. This is brimming with Szechuan and Cantonese restaurants, unique stalls and street traders.
Things to know before you fly to Kuala Lumpur
Airport transfers
Once your flight to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) has landed, it’s a short journey into the centre of the city. You can pre-book your airport transfer with Etihad to have your driver waiting for you on arrival.
Other options include the KLIA Express train, which runs at regular intervals. Buses and taxis are also available.
Local cuisine
Malaysian food is known the world over for its bold flavours, a treat for the taste buds with plenty of vegetarian options too.
Try nasi lemak – meat or fish combined with a spicy sauce, hard-boiled egg, anchovies, peanuts and cucumber slices, all served with delicious coconut milk rice.

Getting around Kuala Lumpur
Central KL is compact enough to explore on foot, but if the humidity is high make use of the monorail, light rail transit and city buses. KTM Komuter trains serve the suburbs. Load a Touch ‘n Go card with credit to use all four systems interchangeably.

How many days should I spend in Kuala Lumpur?
As part of a longer Malaysian holiday, or for a stopover, three to four days should be enough to see the major sights, do some shopping and enjoy a food tour. If KL is your principal destination, you could easily fill a week with activities in the city and a couple of day trips.
