Reasons to visit Australia
Sydney by foot and ferry
Experience the harbour in all its splendour by walking over the bridge, down through Circular Quay and on to the Opera House. Stroll through the Botanical Gardens and up to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, the bench carved from sandstone over 200 years ago. Outside of the city, you can walk along Bondi Beach to Coogee, stopping for a dip in the ocean along the way.
However, if you’d rather rest your legs, the famous Manly Ferry is for you – passing Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House on your way to the beachy suburb of Manly.
Meet Phillip Island’s Little Penguins
Just an hour or so south of Melbourne is Phillip Island, home to some famous feathered individuals. At sunset each day, one of the largest penguin colonies in Australia, the Little Penguins of Phillip Island, return home.
Head to the observation deck for the best views of the birds as they emerge from the waves or opt for an eye-level view at the underground platform, as the penguins waddle home after a long day’s fishing.
The magic of Straddie
Just 40 minutes east of the centre of Brisbane, catch the ferry across Moreton Bay towards North Stradbroke Island. Known affectionately to locals as ‘Straddie’, this island is a hub for wildlife. On the coastal North Gorge Walk, scan the waters for surfing dolphins or diving manta rays.
On land, kangaroos bound around, while koalas relax up high among the branches of the island’s eucalyptus trees. Head there between June and November for the best chance to witness migrating whales, with many species passing the shoreline as they head in search of food.
