Begin your discovery of this dynamic city at the National Museum, where you can uncover its long and fascinating history.

Head to the impressive Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, with minarets that reach high into the sky. Martrys’ Square – with its poignant statue at its centre – honours those who perished under Ottoman rule.

Afterwards, explore Beirut’s Roman baths – this ancient archaeological site is wonderfully preserved and provides an intriguing window to the past.

As evening falls, take to the popular Corniche to find excellent dining options along the waterfront. 

Beirut and the surrounding coastline are blessed with a choice of fabulous beaches. Within the city itself you can unwind on Beirut Beach, soaking up the sun and Mediterranean views. 

The small but beautiful beach at Jammal, less than an hour from the city, is well worth seeking out with its cave grottoes and cosy fish restaurant.

Take the hour-long journey from Beirut to Batroun and you'll find pristine pebble beaches, luxurious resorts and spas right by the water’s edge. 

For a more secluded feel, take the ferry from Tripoli out to the Palm Islands Nature Reserve, a trio of islands and protected area that’s home to endangered species including the rare green turtle.

Head out of Beirut to explore the north of Lebanon, which boasts a varied geography of dramatic mountains and secluded valleys for you to explore. 

Start your journey in the region’s largest city, Tripoli, before heading out into the mountains to enjoy adventurous activities like hiking and paragliding.

Nature lovers won’t want to miss the chance to see Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve.

This diverse forest contains nearly half of the country’s plant species, despite covering a tiny fraction of its total area. Wander among fragrant juniper trees as eagles soar high overhead.

Take a visit to one of Lebanon’s archaeological sites to discover the rich and varied history of the country. Egyptians, Romand and Phoenicians are just some of the ancient civilisations that have left their mark on Lebanese architecture.   

Take a day trip to the stunning Temple of Jupiter, near Baalbek. The largest Roman ruin in the world, this vast structure forms part of a complex of Roman ruins in the city.

Each column is just under 100 feet (30 metres) high and is thought to date back more than 2,000 years. 

Equally impressive is the nearby Temple of Bacchus. This spectacular structure is one of the best-preserved Roman ruins still standing today.

While Lebanon is more likely to conjure up images of sun-soaked cities and warm seas, it’s also a great place to get involved in some winter sports. 

Kfardebian, the largest ski resort in the Middle East, is just an hour from Beirut.

In winter, visitors and locals alike flock to the highest point in the country to enjoy everything from skiing to snowmobiling. There are also geothermal pools here – perfect for warming up after a day in the snow.
