plane Airport transfers

Calicut International Airport (CCJ), Kozhikode’s airport, is around 17 miles away from the city centre, a 50-minute drive in normal traffic conditions. Book an airport transfer with Etihad to have a driver waiting for you in arrivals when you land. You can also catch a bus from the airport. There are no direct trains from Kozhikode Airport to the city centre.

bus Getting around

Buses, taxis and rickshaws are the best ways to get around the city. The bus network is extensive and buses are good value and typically run on time. Both taxis and rickshaws are metered so fares are standardised. You can also rent a car, but driving conditions can be challenging: road blocks are common and traffic is heavy.

charities Cultural considerations

When visiting the temples and mosques of Kozhikode, always remove shoes and cover your shoulders. Most temples provide appropriate clothing on arrival, but it’s a good idea to come prepared.

accommodation Where to stay

Most visitors to Kozhikode tend to stay by the beach, where there are a number of very good hotels and restaurants. You’ll find most of the upmarket hotels on Bank Road and Usha Road.

Five days is enough time to see most of the main sights. If you plan on spending some time relaxing by the beach as well, a week may be better. If you’re using Kozhikode to explore wider Kerala, we recommend two weeks.

What is Kozhikode famous for?

Kozhikode has been famous for the spice trade since the 14th century. With the city located so close to the water, it was in a prime position for trading spices like pepper, cinnamon and ginger. Why is Kozhikode also known as Calicut?

Kozhikode is sometimes referred to as Calicut. This is the Anglican name for Kozhikode and is derived from the city once being popular for trading calico – a type of soft cotton. Sometimes the names are used interchangeably, but Kozhikode is the official name for the city.
