Reasons to visit the Philippines

a sunny day over the cathedral of manila and basilica located in intramuros

Experience Manila

Often used as a gateway to the islands, Manila is still worth exploring in its own right. It may be busy and crowded at times, but the Philippines’ capital is full of energy, passion and some fantastic experiences.

Head to Intramuros, Manila’s historic walled city, to visit Fort Santiago. Built by the Spaniards during the period of colonial rule, it’s where national hero Jose Rizal was imprisoned before being executed for his role in the Philippine Revolution of 1896.

Manila Cathedral, the ornate 16th-century San Agustin Church and Casa Manila museum – which provides an insight into life under Spanish rule – are also well worth seeking out. Elsewhere, Manila Ocean Park is a marine theme park that’s home to around 14,000 creatures from hundreds of species.

white sandy beach on boracay island philippines

Boracay’s pure white beaches

Accessed by boat from Caticlan Airport, you’ll find a slice of paradise at Boracay – the archipelago’s sand and sunshine hub that’s home to dazzling beaches.

This small island features White Beach, the famous stretch of sand so light in colour that it appears luminous beneath the tropical sun. The azure waters are crystal clear thanks to passionate protection of the local environment – eating, drinking and smoking on these sands is strictly banned. Perhaps that’s why some call it the best beach in Asia.

Along the 10 miles (16 km) of glistening coastline in Boracay, you can try water sports, snorkelling or dine on delicious Filipino food at local restaurants.

The otherworldly Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills is a striking rock formation in the Bohol province. In the dry season, as the grass turns golden brown, these distinctive rounded hills look like an enormous box of chocolates.

The region is home to well over a thousand rolling hills – visit between November and May to see and climb them in their prime. The Chocolate Hills Complex viewing platform is a great place to snap some amazing holiday photos. Stay in the nearby city of Carmen and take a local bus or taxi to visit.

diver and coral in tubbataha reef philippines

Thrilling coral reef dives

Once your plane tickets to the Philippines are booked, it’s time to start planning. The country’s beautiful coral reefs should not be missed. The Tubbataha Reef is one of the best – a cacophony of colour featuring bursts of green, pink and red.

There are turtles, exotic sea birds and even sharks at this marine UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a boat from Puerto Princesa from mid-March until June to take the plunge.

Below water, you’ll discover over 300 species of coral. From above, you can glimpse 13 species of dolphins and whales as they pass through the lush oasis.
