Experience the quieter side of the capital with a visit to Ko Kret, a manmade island on the northern outskirts of Bangkok.
Known for its pottery, the handmade terracotta pots produced here are sold across Bangkok.
It’s a foodie island too. Try the kanom krok – coconut pancakes – and the island’s signature dish of tort man nor galah. These are deep-fried patties filled with herbs and mushrooms and served with a sweet and sour sauce.
Things to know before you fly to Bangkok
Transfers from the airport
The journey from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to central Bangkok takes around 30 minutes by car. Pre-book an airport transfer with Etihad and a driver will be waiting for you in arrivals when you land.
The Bangkok Airport Rail Link departs every 15 minutes and takes 25 minutes to reach downtown Bangkok.
Cultural considerations
When visiting temples, you should remember to dress modestly – covering both shoulders and knees. You’ll often be asked to remove your shoes at religious sites too.
Pointing at someone with your finger is considered rude in Thailand, so gesture instead with your whole hand.
Public holidays
New Year is a huge celebration in Bangkok and is celebrated both on 1 January, and from 13 to 15 April for traditional Thai New Year. Songkran, Thai New Year, runs for three days and involves throwing water upon one another as part of the festivities.
During both holidays many local shops and restaurants close.

Bangkok is a hub for Thai food, with brilliant dishes to be found everywhere – from street food vendors to Michelin-starred restaurants.
Try pad thai, a noodle dish that has found success around the world, or tom yum goong, a spicy soup made with classic Thai ingredients like chilli, lemongrass and fish sauce.

There are lots of easy options for getting around Bangkok.
The Bangkok Skytrain runs from early morning to midnight every day and offers impressive city views while connecting you to inner city attractions. You can pay for a single trip or buy a pass for the duration of your trip.
You can also take a river boat, tuk-tuk or a taxi. Make sure you use a taxi with a meter for the best fare.
