There are no fewer than 17 fascinating museums under the Smithsonian Institute banner to visit in Washington D.C. Enthusiasts of US history will be able to see 11 of these locations along the National Mall, which is also home to the U.S. Capitol and the White House.

The Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum and American History Museum are world-class visitor attractions, as is the Museum of African American History and Culture.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery boasts work by the likes of Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning within its permanent collection – all landmark modern American artists.

Seek out hidden gems

Washington is famous for The Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Hill and – of course – The White House itself. But aside from the grand monuments and remarkable buildings, there are some quirky sightseeing spots to seek out.

The picturesque Spanish Steps in the Kalorama neighbourhood make a great backdrop for photos. Kogod Courtyard, adjoining the National Portrait Gallery, has a stunning, undulating steel and glass ceiling. Finally, Rock Creek Park is a woodland oasis off the main track, with idyllic scenery and enchanting paths that follow the creek with gentle twists and turns.

Nightlife in Washington D.C.

For those who want to take in as much of the city’s culture as possible once they’ve booked their Washington D.C. plane tickets, consider planning a trip to U Street. This is the liveliest part of the city, home to numerous dance clubs including the 9:30 Club, the subterranean U Street Music Hall and The Gibson.

At Howard Theatre you’ll find musical influences covering everything from gospel to pop and rhythm and blues, while the historic roof deck space known as Restaurant Marvin on 14th Street boasts a menu inspired by Washington-born Motown legend Marvin Gaye.
