Visit the Roman Theatre
The remains of the city’s Roman Theatre are considered some of the most impressive in the world. Likely built during the reign of Antoninus Pius, this amphitheatre has been cut into the side of a hill and can seat up to 6,000 people.
As this is understandably one of Amman’s most popular attractions, visit at sunrise or sunset to avoid the crowds and the highest temperatures in summer. Admire the Citadel
Perched atop Jabal Al Qala’a, the tallest hill in Amman, is the stunning Citadel – where the ancient royal city of the Ammonites, Rabbath Ammon stood. This is an amazing place to visit and features significant landmarks such as the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace.
Amongst the many wonders is a wall measuring 5,580 foot-long, which dates back to the Bronze Age, and a sixth-century church that celebrates the Byzantine era, as well as many more wonders to behold. If you’re a lover of history, this is the place for you when you fly to Amman.
Climb Mount Nebo
Take a day to visit Mount Nebo, just under an hour away by car from Amman. Mount Nebo is around 1,000 metres high and offers breathtaking views of Jordan. Once you reach the top, you’ll be able to see the Dead Sea, Bethlehem and when the skies are very clear, Jerusalem. Be sure to look for the Brazen Serpent Monument atop the mountain.
Mount Nebo is a sacred site and on the mountain you’ll find the Mount Nebo Monastery, first built in the fourth-century, and turned into a basilica in the Byzantine era. In here, you’ll find ancient mosaics. There’s also a tourism complex, containing the stories of Mount Nebo.
Things to know before you fly to Amman
Airport transfers
Amman Queen Alia International Airport is located about 20 miles from Amman city. There are several ways to travel between the two. You can pre-book your airport transfer with Etihad and have your driver waiting for you on arrival. Taxis, the Airport Express bus and car rental are also available.
Cultural considerations
Jordanians are warm and welcoming, so greeting people with a respectful smile is likely to be well received. Men and women should avoid tight-fitted clothing and cover their arms, legs and chest in more conservative areas or religious sites. If you’re visiting a mosque, you’ll likely need to cover your head.
Getting around Amman
There are a variety of transport options to help you get around Amman. If you’re looking to navigate the city, hopping from point-to-point, look out for yellow private taxis or white public taxis. City buses are the most cost-effective way to get from one part of the city to another.
Local cuisine
Jordanian food wears its influences well, with inspiration from North Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean all to be found here. Enjoy tasty falafel – ground, spiced and deep fried chickpeas – delicious tabbouleh with parsley, garlic, tomatoes and bulgar wheat, or feast on a moreish shawarma kebab.
