Baggage Guidelines

The maximum weight per bag is 32kg. If your allowance exceeds this, evenly distribute the weight across multiple bags. For oversized items, a fee of USD $100 will apply if they exceed standard dimensions but weigh no more than 32kg and are no longer than 300cm. Some sports equipment may be exempt.

Frequently asked questions

If you are flying to the US or Canada, you can check in two bags weighing:

  • 23kg each in Economy
  • 32kg each in Business, First and The Residence
  •

For all other destinations, you can check in as many bags as you like as long the total weight is within your baggage allowance, and any single bag doesn’t exceed 32kg.

Use our baggage calculator or enter your flight details at etihad.com/manage to understand the checked baggage allowance for your flight.

Not always. You may need to pick up your bag and check it in again, depending on the route and country you are travelling through. Your agent can confirm when you check in at the airport.

If you have a connecting flight in the US, you will not need to collect your bags if you’ve pre-cleared US customs in Abu Dhabi and your bags have been tagged to your final destination. If you have not pre-cleared US customs in Abu Dhabi, you must collect your bags and complete all immigration formalities when you land in the US. This applies even if your bags have been tagged to your final destination.

Please let us know that your baggage has not arrived before you leave the airport. We’ll give you a Property Irregularity Report (PIR), which you’ll need to track your bags, to organise a delivery or to make a claim in the future.

Frequently asked questions

It’s best to buy extra baggage online in advance, as you’ll save up to 65% compared to airport rates. You can do this when you book your flight or at etihad.com/manage up to 30 hours before you fly.

Alternatively, you can pay for extra baggage at the airport.

If you are flying from Russia, only Russian bank cards are accepted at the airport. (No cash or international cards.) Please visit Manage your booking or phone the Contact Centre to purchase extra baggage with international bank cards.

If your journey involves more than one airline, any extra baggage charges will be determined by whichever airline is the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) – this is usually the airline operating the longest part of the journey, as defined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Our agents will be able to share the extra baggage fees with you when you check in.

When you've booked your extra baggage, you'll receive a voucher based on weight, number of items or a combination of both. Make sure to keep it handy and present it when you check in at the airport.

Extra baggage is subject to availability. If your bags can't be transported on your flight, we will load them onto the next available service.
